The Need and What Exactly We Are Doing

The Seasons are Changing

The weather and trees in Richmond this time of year are beautiful, but we are daily reminded that the seasons are changing. It seems like we are in a mixture of faint glimpses of summer, the colors of fall, and starting to experience some of the cold of winter. All of these are also daily reminders for us that the seasons of our lives are also changing. We are on the brim of entering a new season in our lives, a very different one like no other that we have experienced before. And although we feel that we are ready to embrace this season, we also sense the difficulty of entering it.

We have three weeks left in our orientation/training in Richmond before we start the packing process. We then will spend Christmas and New Years with family before officially stepping foot on the plane only to return at an undetermined time. Just as we have learned to embrace all of the seasons of weather we ask that you would pray with us that the same would be true for our lives. The new season is full of questions and uncertainty, but we rest and lie in the arms of our Father's love who we know that is sovereign over all of the plans of our lives.

We do want to briefly express our thankfulness during this time of year for all of our partnering churches and for those individuals that have committed to pray and interceded on our behalf in the midst of the darkness on the battlefield. Without the prayer support of all of you this would not be possible nor would we go.

As John Piper says, "Prayer is primarily a wartime walkie-talkie for the mission of the church as it advances against the powers of darkness and unbelief. It is not surprising that prayer malfunctions when we try to make it a domestic intercom to call upstairs for more comforts in the den. God has given us prayer as a wartime walkie-talkie so that we can call headquarters for everything we need as the kingdom of Christ advances in the world. Prayer gives us the significance of front-line forces, and gives God the glory of a limitless Provider. The one who gives the power gets the glory. Thus prayer safeguards the supremacy of God in missions while linking us with endless grace for every need."  

Training

Today marks the end of the second week of training in Richmond, VA. Reflecting on the first two weeks, we are thankful for all the many individuals and churches that have made this training possible for us. It is amazing that we could come up here and virtually live for eight weeks without having to spend a dime if we wanted to, but of course we like to get off campus every now and then to get a taste of some goodness such as Chick-fil-a.

Our training seminars have been full of practical, logisitc stuff, but also packed full of spiritual stuff, showing us our deep need for our Savior. It has also been refreshing to network with like minded individuals and families who are all preparing to go and plant churches all over the globe. Thus far this two weeks have given us an opportunity to leave the crazyness of the last three months behind us and push forward into deeper intimacy with our Father.

The highlight of week one for both of us was an opportunity to take a three hour spiritual retreat. This allowed us the opportunity to get away in a quiet and secret place to commun with God. The highlight of week two was our seminar on prayer and the importance of it in our lives. This has convicted us both as we noticed that in many ways we were depending on our own strength for preparation, which is both sinful and stupid.

We still have six and half weeks of training ahead of us so we have some prayer needs that we would like to leave you with:

• Strength and Energy
• Marital Growth
• Protection from distraction of the enemy
• Complete healing of Elliot as he has been with a cough
• Completion of our many "to do" lists

El dia a llegado

Por fin la espera a llegado a una conclusion y hoy estoy escribiendo estas lineas con un auto nuevamente empacado hasta el techo (por ultima vez) y ya terminando nuestros ultimos detalles aqui en Carolina del Norte. Maniana luego del desayuno partiremos hacia Virginia, donde estaremos internados por 8 semanas en un entrenamiento intensivo para nuestra preparacion hacia Asia del Sur.

A lo largo de estos 3 meses de espera, hemos vivido un sin numero de historias y aventuras; hemos hecho amigos y afianzamos otras amistades; hemos disfrutado de nuestro bebe; pero por sobretodo, hemos visto la mano de Dios y su provision diaria sobre nuestras vidas.

Queremos agradecer infinitamente a las familias que nos hospedaron en Raleigh: Los Chaneys (nuestros amigos y tios de Elliot ahora), Los Parkens y los Simmons. A los amigos argentinos en USA y a los amigos de argentina (Gracias Marcelo Avalos por la ofrenda!). Tampoco nos olvidamos de la familia, que nos sostuvo en oracion y alento constantemente: los suegros que ayudaron en todo lo posible, mis padres que ofrendaron, mi hermano que nos hizo asados y viajo hasta Raleigh para ayudar con la mudanza, la ofrenda de la flia Odom y de extensa familia en Virginia Beach. GRACIAS A TODOS!

Tambien estamos agradecidos por nuestra iglesia The Summit por enviarnos como iglesia y apoyarnos en todo este proceso (especialmente nuestros mentores Hilary y Curt). Tambien a las iglesias de Northside y Western Avenue que nos estan apoyando en oracion, provision y mediante posibles grupos que iran a visitarnos a nuestro destino final en Asia.

Hoy mas que nunca sabemos que las puertas de las naciones nos esperan. Que hay un mundo afuera con hambre y sed del evangelio y que hay millones que aun siguen muriendo diariamente sin conocer sobre Jesus y el sacrificio que el hizo en la cruz para nuestra salvacion y vida eterna. Hoy mas que nunca queremos alentar a todos a predicar a diestra y siniestra sobre el mensaje de la cruz, no para hacer "procelitismo" como muchos dicen, sino para que todos tengan la oportunidad de ser salvos. Y cuando esto sea una realidad, recien ahi diremos... ahora si Dios... que venga Tu Reino!!!

Where we've Been and Where we're Going

As most of you know the last three months has been a whirlwind of unexpected occurrences in our lives, but we are continually being told that is the life of a missionary. So in some ways we feel legit now, although we have still yet to set foot where we will be planting churches.

In the last three months we have lived in six different houses, traveling with a car packed to the roof every time as we went from one house to the other. Definitely not what we would have ever chosen, but God has been faithful and allowed this time to prepare us in many ways. It has allowed us to see more friends and family before moving, it has allowed us more time together, and it has allowed us to do many things that we would not have been able to do otherwise.

We currently have five partnering churches and many others that are interested in sending short-term teams to work with us, which we are grateful for every one of them and what they are doing in their contexts to plant churches and spread the gospel. Our local church, The Summit, commissioned us to plant churches two weeks ago, which was a very special time in our lives as we value and love our local church.

Now as these three months are coming to a close, we are spending our last week in the Charlotte, NC area where I grew up. This is allowing us to see family, pack, repack, and connect with some more partners of the gospel.

In one week we will be driving north to Richmond, VA, where we will spend the next eight weeks for training and preparation for life in another country. We will then spend Christmas back in Charlotte and then start our new year and new lives in South Asia, arriving approximately January 3, 2012. We would really appreciate prayer during this huge transition in our lives.

Here are our current prayer needs:

• Our adjustments to so much traveling and moving (Specifically our 7 mo. old Elliot).
• For humility and open hearts to learning as we are in our training.
• For a smooth transition with the existing team members in S. Asia as we will be the newbies. 
• For our national partners in S. Asia that we will be equipping and training to send out.
• For the salvation of the people that we will encounter that have never heard the name of Jesus.

Defining an Unreached People Group

On a daily basis we get questions from people wondering why we would move to South Asia to plant churches. Reasons people question us range from there being needs here as well as fear for our family. To be clear, we believe that there are needs everywhere for people to hear the gospel message, but at this time in our lives, God has placed the unreached people groups on our heart and called us to go to them. And most of these unreached people groups are found in South Asia. 

In July we answered the question, "Why Move to South Asia to Plant Churches?"http://t.co/OlC95aa, in which we quoted the statistic from Desiring God International that over 70% of Asian's have yet to hear of Jesus Christ, even for the first time. Today, we would like to take a moment to answer exactly what is an unreached people group so that you will sense the need that there is for these people to hear the gospel message for the very first time. In fact, on a regular basis we receive this exact question from people, "What is an unreached people group?"

In order to answer that question today we are going to quote a Pioneer in Central Asia, from the video above, who says of unreached people groups, "We're not talking about people who are lost and don't know the Lord; we're talking about people who are lost and don't know the Lord and there's no one that speaks their language that can tell them. There is no church that exists... That's an unreached people group."

Philippians 4 - Desde la perspectiva de Matt

Be Content - God Is Enough

I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. I can do all things through him who strengthens me.

Philippians 4:12-13

The point of these verses is obviously contentment in Christ in the midst of life's difficult circumstances. But until recently I was never truly faced with circumstances that required me to do a self-examination to see if I was really content in Christ. 

Now Philippians 4 speaks to me in a whole new light as I have been faced with a situation that required me to see where my contentment was truly found. And I can honestly say that I am not so sure that I am quite there yet; but I definitely believe that God is using my circumstance and this passage to help me discover that true contentment comes from and in Him.

Something else that stood out to me in this passage like never before when reading it is that just like the Philippians partnered with Paul in his ministry at both the spiritual and practical level(4:14-16), my local church has done the same with me and my family. 

As Paul pointed out in verse 17, we were not seeking this gift of support from the church, but it has been incredible to see the body of Christ surround us with both spiritual and practical support in this time. It has been both a testimony of their fruit to the body of Christ, but also to those that are not yet part of the family of God. 

One friend even commented, "I am starting to think that maybe the rest of us need to start going to church because it seems like it doesn't matter what type of situation you guys face, it always seems to work out."

The truth is that this is a testimony of the church being the church. And what our friend is seeing is that although we face difficult circumstances just as she does, we have an unexplainable provision and contentment that allows us to have joy at all times as seen in 4:4. 

So if you are struggling to find your contentment in Christ then start today. Embrace the truth that God is enough and that in Him you can do all things and face every kind of circumstance in life. Be content - God is enough. 

Filipenses 4

El blog de hoy es cortito y con el solo deseo de compartirles sobre el pasaje en Filipenses 4 que Matthew me leyo anoche. Tambien este blog es para resaltar la soberania de Dios sobre nuestras vidas ya que soy consciente de que en nuestro blog anterior quizas use palabras muy drasticas y fuertes haciendo que muchos se queden preocupados por nosotros y esa no era la intension del mismo.

Asi que aqui van las animadoras palabras de Filipenses 4:4-23.

⁴ Regocijaos en el Señor siempre. Otra vez digo: ¡Regocijaos! ⁵ Vuestra gentileza sea conocida de todos los hombres. El Señor está cerca. ⁶ Por nada estéis afanosos, sino sean conocidas vuestras peticiones delante de Dios en toda oración y ruego, con acción de gracias. ⁷ Y la paz de Dios, que sobrepasa todo entendimiento, guardará vuestros corazones y vuestros pensamientos en Cristo Jesús.

8 Por lo demás, hermanos, todo lo que es verdadero, todo lo honesto, todo lo justo, todo lo puro, todo lo amable, todo lo que es de buen nombre; si hay virtud alguna, si algo digno de alabanza, en esto pensad. ⁹ Lo que aprendisteis y recibisteis y oísteis y visteis en mí, esto haced; y el Dios de paz estará con vosotros.

21 Saludad a todos los santos en Cristo Jesús. Los hermanos que están conmigo os saludan. ²² Todos los santos os saludan, y especialmente los de la casa de César.

Este pasaje es parte de la carta de Pablo a la Iglesia de Filipenses.

Todo el capitulo fue una bendicion para nosotros al leerlo. La Palabra de Dios tiene eso, te llena el alma y satisface el corazon. Lo que yo resalte en este pasaje es lo que Dios me estuvo hablando a mi, Andrea; y en lo que tuvimos que apretar las clavijas a la hora de estar en sintonia con lo que Pablo esta tratando de animar a la iglesia.

-La oracion, no solo para no estar afanosos sino tambien para con accion de gracias recordar la obra de Jesucristo en nuestro diario andar.

-Como guardar nuestros corazones y nuestra mente. Cuando algo injusto nos pasa, mi primera reaccion como la de todos es la de protestar y tratar de hacer justicia levantando argumentos y maquinando soluciones que me libren del momentaneo sufrimiento. Este pasaje nos lleva a hacer lo opuesto, a poner la mira en todo lo que es de buen nombre: puro, honesto, digno de alabanza. De esta manera la Biblia dice que el Dios de paz estara con nosotros.

-"Todo lo puedo en Cristo que me fortalece", no hay nada que se escape a esta verdad y fue bueno el recordarlo.

En estos dias Matthew va a estar escribiendo su punto de vista de este pasaje y tambien lo pondremos en un post. Hasta prontito!

Lo imprevisto ocurre cuando menos te lo esperas.

Como muchos sabran, este blog fue iniciado como manera de ponerles al tanto de lo que ocurre en nuestra familia a lo largo de nuestra preparacion y llegada a Asia del Sur. Nuestro entrenamiento en Richmond, Virginia se nos habia dicho que comenzaba el 25 de Julio de este anio hasta el 23 de Septiembre y de que para los primeros dias de Octubre estariamos de camino a Asia.

Tres semanas atras me recuerdo tomando una foto de nuestras pocas pertenencias listas para ser llevadas en una camioneta y dejar nuestra casa vacia para los nuevos inquilinos. En ese momento una mezcla de emociones se hicieron sentir, emociones como de alegria a lo que nos estabamos embarcando y a la vez un poco de nostalgia por lo que estabamos dejando. Pero lo que mas recuerdo era el sentimiento de alivio, de que habiamos hecho todo lo que hasta el momento era necesario y que hasta el momento estabamos en tiempo y forma para seguir con el siguiente paso.

Una semana mas tarde, 10 dias antes de comenzar nuestro entrenamiento de dos meses, recibimos una noticia inesperada, fuera de nuestros calculos y que por un momento pense estaba en una de esas camaras ocultas y que nos estaban jugando una mala pasada.
Por medio de un email la agencia con la cual estamos trabajando para llegar a Asia del Sur, nos avisa que nos pasaron al entrenamiento que comienza en Octubre y que esto demoraria nuestra partida hasta los primeros dias de Enero. Asi es, Octubre!!! Que significa eso? 3 meses de avismo y de limbo. 3 meses que tendriamos que llenar de completa dependencia y vida por fe. 3 meses que para nuestros ojos parecian una eternidad. Teniamos trabajo y casa para ese momento? no, ya habiamos renunciado y alquilado nuestra casa. Sabiamos que hacer? no!

Mi primer reaccion fue, cuando llegaremos? La de Matthew fue desilucion total y un bombardeo de pensamientos que por poco todo el plan se va tirado por la borda. Oramos, lloramos y pedimos consejo; Una de las tantas Palabras que recibimos y que nos ayudaron fue: Romanos 8:28 "Y sabemos que todas las cosas ayudan a bien, a los que aman a Dios, a los que conforme a su propósito son llamados."  Asi es como llegamos a la conclusion de que pasaremos por estos 3 meses pero con el amor, proteccion y carinio de nuestras familias y nuestra iglesia local. Tuvimos propuestas de ir a pasar estos 3 meses en Virginia Beach, en un dpto vacio que nos prestaban con un trabajo de 3 meses ayudando a una iglesia, pero el llamado de estar en comunion y bajo la cobertura de nuestra iglesia local nos hizo volver a Raleigh.

Hoy estamos viviendo cada dos semanas de casa en casa de hermanos de la iglesia, mayormente casas que los duenios salen de vacaciones o que son de parejas jovenes que tienen espacio para nosotros. Estamos aprendiendo a vivir por fe y a ser flexibles. Matthew volvio a su antiguo trabajo por un par de meses y estamos tomando este tiempo para prepararnos espiritual y emocionalmente para lo que van a ser los proximos dos anios de nuestras vidas.  Elliot? El esta aprendiendo a ser flexible tambien. Al cambiarnos de casa cada 2 semanas el se despierta en lugares diferentes con distintas personas a su alrededor y creciendo con lo imprescindible y necesario para su crecimiento: la leche, su cuna y papa y mama.

Why We See the Value in Planting Churches in South Asia?

People often ask why we are moving to South Asia to plant churches when there are many places in the US that need churches planted. First, we do not believe that this is an either/or, but rather a both/and as there are needs for churches here and places around the world. Second, 2 out of 3 people on the planet live in the great continent of Asia. According to Desiring God International 70% of Asian's have still never heard of Jesus Christ, not even for the first time.

This video below captures the essence of why we are moving to South Asia to plant churches. "Missions isn't simply about winning individuals to Christ. The unique task of missions is to plant the church among all people groups."

We would challenge you all to consider the challenge to GO to the nations in some capacity as the need is great, but the laborers are few as we are reminded in Luke 10.2: And he said to them, "The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest. 

The Value of Partner Church Relationships

We spent some time in Wilmington, NC this weekend to visit with one of our partnering churches in church planting, Northside Church. By partnering church we mean a church that has committed to pray for us, walk along side of us, and assist us in the planting of churches in South Asia. We believe that it is key to bring along some of the foundational churches in your life when being sent out to church plant as it encourages them, blesses them, and allows them to take part in the larger mission of God.

We value their partnership dearly as this was the first church that we were part of together. They gave Matt the opportunity to teach a class on Sunday morning where he was able to share about our vision of church planting and then lay before them some challenges for their own lives of embracing their roles as everyday missionaries in Wilmington and beyond.

Our favorite part of spending Sunday with these brothers and sisters in Christ was seeing Acts 13:2-3 practical lived out. [2] While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.”[3] Then after fasting and praying they laid their hands on them and sent them off.

The entire congregation of Northside took time to recognize us as set apart for this task that we have been called to by God. They then corporately surrounded us, laid hands on us, and prayed for us as they sent us out to go and plant churches.

We were greatly encouraged by our weekend at Northside Church and look forward to our partnership with them in the calling of Church Planting. We love to see the church on mission and recognize when God is at work and joining Him in that work!

Aqui vamos!

Ok, ya era hora que comenzara a escribir en nuestro pequeno rincon familiar. Para nuestros amigos argentinos y de habla espanola yo estare compartierdo en castellano y Matthew compartira en ingles los pensamientos, sucesos, descubriemientos y aventuras que desde ahora experimentaremos como familia.

Como todos sabran estamos a puertas de mudarnos al Sur de Asia por un par de anios. Este ha sido un llamado que desde mi adolescencia lo he cultivado y que desde el 1er dia de nuestro noviazgo nos hemos prometido y hemos prometido a Dios que lo hariamos. Para los que me conocen desde mis 12 anios saben que este ha sido el latir de mi corazon y que por Su misericordia divina y Su gracia Dios me ha guiado hasta aqui. Pero ultimamente me he sorprendido con las reacciones de los que no me han conocido desde antes, los que solo me conocieron en estos 4 ultimos anios de casada. Piensan que es algo de Matthew, solo una tarea para terminar un ciclo de su Master y volver rapidamente antes que algo nos ocurra o que suframos mas de lo que debemos.
Esto ha ocurrido varias y repetidas veces. En la mayoria de ellas he aprovechado en compartir mi fe, pero en otras desaproveche la oportunidad.

Asi que aqui va, para que quede claro y nadie se confunda, para que la verdad del evangelio no se diluya y para que nadie piense que es solo una tarea mas o un suenio; esta es la mejor manera que tengo de explicarlo.

El llamado: Mateo 28:19-20.

“Por tanto, id, y haced discípulos a todas las naciones, bautizándolos en el nombre
del Padre, y del Hijo, y del Espíritu Santo; enseñándoles que guarden todas las cosas
que os he mandado; y he aquí yo estoy con vosotros todos los días, hasta el fin del
mundo. Amén."
Claramente la Biblia no esta dando una sugerencia o diciendo que el circulo de amigos/ciudad donde vivimos son los unicos que necesitan Salvacion, sino TODAS LAS NACIONES!

El Mensaje: Juan 3:16
"Porque de tal manera amo Dios al mundo que ha dado a su Hijo Unigenito para que todo aquel que en El crea no se pierda mas tenga vida eterna"
La muerte de Jesus en el Calvario tiene un valor incalculable, es la llave para nuestra Salvacion eterna y es ofrecida a todos, solo por medio de Jesucristo.

La causa: Romanos 5:12
"Por tanto, como el pecado entro en el mundo por un hombre y por el pecado la muerte, asi la muerte paso a todos los hombres, por cuanto todos pecaron."
Nosotros no podemos Salvarnos a nosotros mismos, todos hemos pecado. La unica salida, la unica solucion es por medio de la muerte de Jesucristo en la cruz del calvario.

Para quien?: Romanos 3:23
"Por cuanto todos pecaron, y estan destituidos de la gloria de Dios."
Romanos 3:10
"Como esta escrito: No hay justo, ni aun uno."
Yo, Matthew, Elliot y cada uno de nosotros estamos separados de la gloria de Dios a causa del Pecado y por eso mismo es que necesitamos aceptar a Jesus y una relacion personal con el, la unica manera de llegar al cielo.

El Lugar: Sur de Asia
Mas alla de haber tenido un llamado a este pais, las caracteristicas de este pais muestran que hay una gran necesidad de este mensaje de Salvacion. La cantidad de gente, los distintos dialectos, la pobreza y la incalculable cantidad de religiones; hacen que muy pocos hayan ido a estos lugares a compartir las buenas nuevas de Salvacion y como resultado hoy en dia existen naciones enteras que nunca han escuchado sobre este JESUS.

Asi es como hoy nos encontramos empacando, vendiendo/regalando las cosas de mi casa, decidiendo que ropa Elliot va a necesitar y que medicinas si o si debemos llevar. Pero hay algo en mi corazon que no me deja, hay algo que me retrae y me llama de muy adentro, es de no perder estos momentos de seguir proclamando el evangelio, esta Salvacion, y no perderme en la "preparacion" siendo insensible a lo que ocurre a mi lado.
Solo le pido a Dios que estos tiempos de stress y ansiedad sean tambien para meditar y prepararnos en Su Palabra. Que Dios nos guie y nos acompanie y QUE VENGA SU REINO!
